Week 13, 2022 August 13th – 19th

Another great week here at Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. Our 13th week of the season saw plenty of trophy sized fish being caught and released. We have had more than our share of rain this season and this week was no exception, we had almost rain at some point almost every day. The northern fishing is kicking into high gear with many of the toothy critters being caught on spinner rigs and big stick baits. Many of the bigger fish were caught trolling or casting the weed lines. We also saw some big northern come out of deeper water over rock piles and gravel humps, usually in 25’ to 32’ of water. Jon Heuer was a rookie in camp this week but with the skillful guidance of his son Brandon He caught and released some very nice northern. Jon was new to casting the big stick baits but caught on quickly, he released a 29 1/2”, a 31 1/2”, and a 34” brute, not bad considering he was stuck with Brandon all week, maybe next season Jon “Sea Legs” Heuer will break the 40” mark. Sue and Bill Mincks love casting for northerns and Sue’s best was a nice 30” northern and Bill clobbered her with his 36” brute he released. Kevin Halla has been coming to camp for a long time and he knows all the spots and it showed when he released a chunky 36” northern. Brandon Heuer is a great son-in-law but also a pretty good fisherman or so he says. He loves casting big musky baits for the toothy critters and he had good numbers to prove it. He released a 35”, a 36”, and a 37 1/2” northern this week. Bob and Veneta Bruns came to camp with their son Tim again this season, they always catch big fish and this season was no exception. Tim must know where to go because Veneta released a chunky 33” northern only to see her husband Bob catch and release the biggest northern of his 88-year life, a monster pike that was 41” long, it was a long battle but Bob eventually won the fight and was the proud winner of the big northern of the week and has the bragging rights in the family for now but a September trip might change things. Our walleye bite is solid again this week with fish being caught in the deep weeds on live bait and twister tails and in deeper water over rock piles and gravel bars using a jig and minnow or bottom bouncer with a crawler or minnow. Color didn’t seem to make much of a difference but white or pink was still very popular with our guests. Sue Cebelinski started things off when she landed a nice 21” walleye, Jon “Sea Legs” Heuer released a fat 25 1/2” walleye. Brandon “wanna be” Heuer released a chunky 26” walleye. The biggest walleye of the week was caught and released by the “one”and thank goodness “only” Frank Cabelinski, he released a beautiful 28 1/2” walleye to proudly claim top honors for the week, let’s see what happens next season when Alan and Karen are back on the lake😜 The bass fishing has slowed down the last few weeks mainly because the bass are biting early and late when most of our guests are still in camp. The bass that were caught came on crank baits and twister tails along with a slip bobber and worm.  Brandon Heuer, there’s that name again landed and releases a 16 1/2″ bass to his surprise, Luke Prunuske released a chunky 17″ bass which impressed father Dave until he caught and released a massive 18 1/2” smallmouth bass, like father like son, I guess. Speaking of father and son, Dave and Luke also were the perch champions in camp this week, they caught plenty of perch some were small but Luke did have a giant 12 1/2” perch to easily win big perch of the week.  Next week promises more fun and excitement for our guests so check out our post again soon. To our guests coming up remember to get your licenses ahead of time and still no poultry products allowed from the U.S. so pick up what you need after you cross. Also, no live bait allowed including night crawlers so you can pick up some at Clark’s in Dryden or any of your favorite bait and tackle shops. That’s all for now this is Jim from Wabaskang👌🏻
