Greetings from Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. Another exciting week here at camp, plenty of eater fish being caught and some monster trophies as well. We are still hoping for some significant rain in the coming weeks to help with the dangerous wildfire situation and also help maintain the decent water levels we are experiencing right now.
The walleye fishing had good days and slow days on week two of the season. Most fish are relatively shallow and taking a jig and minnow combinatorial or twister tail and jig combination. Mornings were great for eaters and evenings seemed to be the best time for a shot at a real trophy. Mike Pease is well known here in camp, and he released a 23 1/4” and 25” walleye this week. Dick Paskon returned to camp after a 20-year absence and managed to catch and release a 26” walleye, a personal best for him. Orion Barbic was enjoying his first stay at Jim and Julie’s, and he released a beautiful 28” walleye. The biggest walleye of the week and hat winning fish was caught and released by Craig Kleinschmidt, he came to camp with a new Ranger fishing boat and landed his giant 29” beauty the first hour he was here, great way to break your new boat in on Wabaskang.
Bass fishing kept everyone interested last week. Most big females are close to their spawning areas and are extremely aggressive hitting small crank baits and twister tails. Most fish were caught in 5’ of water or less. The biggest smallmouth bass this week was caught and released by Bruce Hein, his 19” beauty was a hat winner for him. We did have a big largemouth bass released this week as well, Matt Blau released a robust 19” bass that he caught down in Keynote Lake, we generally only see a handful of largemouth caught each season.
Northern fishing was good this week with most fish being caught in shallow water on tiny jigs and small crank baits. The giant pike are roaming the shallow water looking for an easy meal since the crappies, perch, and walleyes are all in the same area. Kevin Meysembourg released a chunky 35 1/2” brute, Mike Jenkins returned to camp again this season, he drove me to the hospital last year when I broke my back and he was able to concentrate on fishing this time around, he released a beautiful 37 1/2”northern. The biggest northern of the week was released by Matt Blau, his gigantic 41” pike was easily his biggest ever and earned him a free hat and bragging rights all the way home to Missouri with his fishing pals.
Crappie fishing continues to impress our guests. Most fish are in shallow water starting to spawn or just getting done. A slip bobber and minnow worked well along with a tiny jig with a tinsel tail. Logan Kleinschmidt caught a 14” slab but Rick Carlson did him one better by catching a giant 15” crappie in spite of having his cumbersome buddy Conrad in the boat.
We had a few lake trout caught this week but only one real giant, Kyle Weber landed a beautiful 36 1/4” trout while fishing with dipsy divers in Aerobus Bay, great catch Kyle.
