Greetings from Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. I’m a bit behind on my weekly write-ups so let’s get started. Week 12 of our season saw warm temperatures and continued dry weather. The MNR has issued a ban on any open fires which will continue for the foreseeable future. Our walleye fishing was good again this week with plenty of trophies being caught and released. A Lindy Rig and large minnow worked well along with crank baits and medium sized plastics. Best colors were white, purple, and green. Mark Kummerow caught a 25″ beauty, my brother Mike caught a pair of chunky 25″ walleyes, Brian Hall tried his best each season to out-fish his wife Natalie and his 25″ walleye was a winner in his boat. Wade Wiese managed to catch a fat 26″ walleye, but his fish was eventually crushed by Tim Wuethrich, his 29 1/2″ trophy was a hat winner this week.
Northern fishing was fast and furious this week with numerous trophies being caught and released. Giant musky baits worked well as did a simple jig and minnow combination. Klint Moser made his first trip to camp, and his 35″ pike was a personal best, Kyle McNeil has never caught a 40″ pike, and this season was no exception, he did manage to land a 38″ beauty though. Tim Wuethrich Jr. caught a monster 40 1/2″ beast, Marty Neihouser caught a 41 1/2″ northern that he thought might be a hat winner but hold on Marty not so fast because Wade Wiese was in camp and he had the secret sauce going this week, he caught a 36 1/2″, a 38″, a 38 1/2″, and an impressive 43 1/2″ northern which is the biggest to date this season in camp.
Our bass fishing kept everyone busy this week, top water baits and soft plastics worked very well especially in the mornings and evenings. Green or brown were great colors along with yellow and pink. Charlie Zender started things off with his chunky 17″ bass, Brian Hall landed an 18″ bass, but his wife Natalie quickly crushed his fish with a chunky 18 1/2″ fish. Tim Wuethrich Jr. had a decent week fishing bass, he caught an 18 1/2″, 18 3/4″, and a beautiful 19″ beast. Tim’s brother Logan had his own ideas about winning a free hat and he reported catching an 18 3/4″ and a trophy 19 1/2″ bass to take top honors for the week.
Remember to have clean and dry boats when entering Canada, the MNR is genuinely concerned about invasive species entering Ontario waters from our guests to the south. Try to have a copy of your fishing license when you arrive at camp so that I can keep on file if the MNR wants to review them. The Whiskey Jack Restaurant is ready to serve you a great lunch or dinner so make plans to let Laura and Graham do the cooking a night or two.
